ACUPUNCTURE
Both traditional and laser acupuncture is available at SIA
Medical Centre. Acupuncture is useful in the treatment of many
conditions as headaches, Osteoarthritis, rhematoid Arthritis,
muscularskeletal complaints, sporting injuries, depression,
anxiety, menopausal complaints, painful periods, allergy and
smoking cessation.
WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture is a form of therapy that utilizes the
Ancient Chinese concept of qi or energy flow. The body is
served by a number of energy pathways or meridians, which have
specific points along them. These can be manipulated to
balance the flow of energy through the body. Using special
fine acupuncture needles or a low powered laser beam we can
stimulate these acupuncture points where they will affect the area
to be treated
HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?
Although nobody knows the precise mechanism of how acupuncture
works, we do know, through research, that acupuncture works by
manipulating pain pathways to rewire the traffic flow through
them. It achieves this through stimulation of different
nerves through the points. Acupuncture increases endorphins
or happy hormones, which have been measured in the blood. It
also works on reducing the sympathetic or “fright/flight” part of
the nervous system and promoting the relaxing and nurturing
part.
HOW CAN I HAVE ACUPUNCTURE?
At SIA Medical Centre, we currently have two doctors practising
acupuncture. Both Dr Martin Sia and Dr Arete Kouteris have
completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Acupuncture.
They are proficient in the use of both needle and laser
acupuncture. Acupuncture usually consists of 10 weekly
sessions and ongoing maintenance therapy, which can occur
fortnightly or monthly.
The cost of Acupuncture is $50.00 per session and a rebate of
$31.45 can be claimed from Medicare.
AM I SUITABLE FOR ACUPUNCTURE?
Many condition including back and neck pain and all
musculoskeletal conditions, headaches and menopause symptoms can be
treated with acupuncture. It is usually best to make an
appointment for an assessment first and them start acupuncture
therapy.
